Video: Memorable vice presidential debate moments

Spinners and Winners

The sole vice presidential debate of 2012 is tomorrow night, and with presidential polls showing the race tightening, the heat is on both Vice President Joe Biden, and Congressman Paul Ryan to perform. But how much do vice presidential debates influence the final outcome?

The first vice presidential debate was only 36 years ago. President Ford's running mate Bob Dole faced off against Jimmy Carter's VP pick Walter Mondale. It was the first VP debate and the first VP debate gaffe, when World War II hero Bob Dole seemed to imply that the all the American wars of the 20th century, even the struggle to defeat Nazi Germany, were partisan exercises.

"It's not a very good issue any more than the war in Vietnam would be, or World War II or World War I or the war in Korea - all Democrat wars, all in this century," said Dole. "I figured it up the other day. If we added up the killed and wounded in Democrat wars in this century, it would be about 1.6 million Americans, enough to fill the city of Detroit."

"I think Senator Dole has richly earned his reputation as a hatchet man tonight," replied Mondale. Mondale won that exchange and ultimately the vice presidency.

In 1988, Dan Quayle squared off against Lloyd Bentsen, and insisted he had plenty of experience to be vice president.

"I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency," said Quayle.

"Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy," said Bentsen, in what has become one of the most memorable debate comebacks in recent history. But it did not matter, the Bush-Quayle ticket won in an electoral landslide

In the first three-way vice presidential debate in 1992, the most memorable lines of the debate came from Ross Perot's running mate - Admiral James Stockdale.

"Who am I? Why am I here?" asked the admiral in his opening remarks, hip to the fact that voters were focused?on the match-up between the Republican and Democratic tickets.

"I would like to get in -- I feel like I'm an observer at a ping pong game," he said, when moderator Hal Bruno, of ABC News, gave him a chance to jump back into the debate after nearly five minutes had passed without him saying anything.

The most-watched vice presidential debate was just four years ago, when Sarah Palin debated Joe Biden. It was generally seen as one of Palin's best performances of the campaign.

Rise in California gas price slows, remains record

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The rise in California gasoline prices has slowed after recent jarring increases, but nonetheless the cost of a gallon inched up to another record high, even as officials hope their emergency action will help ease the sticker shock.

The average price for regular gas in the state on Tuesday was a bit over $4.67 a gallon, according to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report. The price was a state record and the highest in the nation.

The cost increased only a fraction of a cent overnight, however ? compared to nearly 50 cents in the past week.

The highest average price in the state, at $4.75, is in Central California, in the San Luis Obispo area.

San Diego average prices are at $4.72 a gallon, and the Los Angeles area about $4.71.

Analysts said the spike has been driven by refinery disruptions and corrosion issues in an important pipeline.

Also contributing to the high prices, California law, in an effort to reduce air pollution, requires that gas stations during warmer months use a special blend of fuel that is not widely available.

State leaders ? and drivers ? hope to see gasoline prices drop soon because Gov. Jerry Brown has ordered the California Air Resources Board to allow so-called "winter-blend" gasoline to be sold in California earlier than usual to increase supply.

California usually converts to the gas on Oct. 31. The fuel evaporates in heat more quickly than summer-blends, so sends more pollutants into the environment, especially in warm weather.

Gil Duran, a spokesman for Brown, said the governor looked at all the options available, particularly scientists' prediction that such a change would not have a significant effect on the environment, and "when he learned this could increase the supply by 8 to 10 percent, it just made sense."

Sunday's action was the first time since 2005 ? when gas supplies were affected by refinery disruptions in the wake of Hurricane Katrina ? that the air board has approved early conversion to winter-gas blends.

Officials said it could take days before prices fall, depending on how quickly refineries can get the winter-blend fuel to market.

"The gasoline market moves on news, and this is clearly good news in terms of supply, because it should be able to increase supply immediately," said Alison apRoberts, a spokeswoman with the California Energy Commission.

Record-setting prices at the pump has also prompted calls for a federal investigation.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., on Monday asked the Department of Justice's oil and gas price fraud working group to look into whether maintenance issues at refineries were being used as an excuse to drive up energy prices.

Boxer's request came a day after Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate, saying residents need to be protected from "malicious trading schemes."

Johnson-Kuchar ensure US to have big lead Sunday

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar beat Nicolas Colsaerts and Paul Lawrie 1 up, ensuring that the Americans will have at least a four-point lead going into Sunday's singles matches.

Cheers erupted when Colsaerts missed a 10-footer that would have given him and Lawrie a half point. The Americans lead 10-4, and need 14 ? points to regain the Ryder Cup. The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.

After losing their 1-up lead with a pair of bad shots on 16, Johnson put them back in front Saturday with a 15-foot birdie on the par-3 17th. He was already walking toward the hole with the ball still rolling, and threw a roundhouse punch when it dropped. Kuchar missed a 15-footer on 18 that would have won the hole, giving Colsaerts that last chance. But he had a little too much speed on it, and skirted the hole.
